i finally gave in and installed skype today. people keep asking to do this-or-that over skype with me. i've noted that i've stayed away from it because it's non-Free and i had no pressing need for it. well, the need just went over the top of "pressing" today and so now i'm skyped. amazingly easy to set up and works very well under linux. so, kudos to skype for that.
now we just need to convince them to offer a KDE-ified version for KDE4 once our libs are ready for that....

It's fairly integrated as it is, but alas it doesn't play nice with arts... Which is a serious bummer.
And I think you're being spammed...
If you ever get it working together with arts without delays, please post a message... :-/
Skype allready fits nicely in KDE. The only thing which annoys me is the fact that Skype starts too soon if it's started by your session.
In my case I don't think arts is ready for Skype while starting my session. I will get a sound device error when I try to make or recieve a call.
Quiting Skype and start it while KDE is allready running solves that. I have no other problems with Skype, it just works fine, with arts.
Skype does not fit in at all. If you own a soundcard with no hardware-mixing support, then either you quit arts or you take a delay of more than a second using artsdsp.
I don't see why the don't implement support for arts/esd/alsa.
I also don't see why there isn't softwaremixing in the linux-kernel. But that's another story.
ok, now I'm not sure anymore. My Skype works fine, really. I believe its running via the artsdsp wrapper. It is when I start it from the command line.
I run arts, but I also have a hardware mixing soundcard. So if you tell me how I can see whether I'm using arts or hardware mixing, I can tell you if Skype can work fine with arts.
quidome, because I'm using a hardware-mixing enabled sound-card (audigy2) I don't have any problems either. I just run it with OSS (and alsa emulates OSS for me), without any artswrapper like artsdsp.
But on my laptop, where I don't have hardware-mixing, running skype is a pain in the ass. And so I heared from others with no hardware-mixing. I think the majority of the average desktop-users don't have hardware-mixing enabled soundcards. :)
No you're right, skype runs fine. But you need hardware-mixing to get run simulatiously with arts. :)
Morphie, I just checked.
My Skype runs through artsd. And it works fine. I also have a laptop with no hardware mixing, no problems there either.
One thing I do though ... I run arts over OSS emulation. I had some trouble with arts over alsa and don't use that anymore. Maybe thats what causes the difference in Skype experience. My SKype really runs fine through artsd.
There is a bit of support for Skype in KDE. It is my (not yet published) Skype protocol for Kopete.
You can configure Kopete to start Skype for when the account should go online and remove it from session managment. Kopete will just start it when it needs.
Another thing I noticed is, that Skype uses oss, which is bad, as oss does not support dmix as well as alsa. But Skype needs the device only when you are calling and in that time, you do not want other sounds anyways.
So, I implemented possibility of starting scripts when
A) Call starts
B) Call (or last call) ends
C) There is incoming call and rings
So it allows you to
A) Kill arts and start it as null output
B) Restore the old arts state (playing)
C) Ring to skype as you like..
The scripts are shipped with the protocol, you just have to look into the config dialog and read recommendation how to set it up.
I;m just waiting for SVN access to WWW/areas/extrager, so I can move the plugin to apropriate place and prepare it for packaging.
Better go with Gizmo instead of Skype, now that eBay (the Microsoft of the retail/auction market place) has bought it.
@dave
i'd love to try gizmo out, but my laptop is running suse. the boxes i have running debian based systems are where i want to voip from =(
get gizmo in some other package formats and i'll take it for a spin immediately. =)
openwengo, does it connect with skype users?
We need a "gaim" style version of skype, especially now since eBay is creating all the hype around skype.
