KDE Video Cast, Episode 2: Torrent it!

I got up early this morning so I could luxuriate in a hot shower, get dressed and go over my notes before the video cast this morning. It was an hour earlier and the second episode, so live attendance was down a fair amount: it peaked at "only" 194, which was 27 fewer than last week. I expected a spike on the first week (curiosity) and I knew shifting the time by an hour would suck as well. Oh well =)

I did, however, manage to figure out how to put text messages on the stream as well as videos hosted on Youtube. Unfortunately, these only show during the live broadcast and are not part of the resulting recorded version. I put a link to the show notes on the screen during the live broadcast thinking that would help people downloading it later, but ... fail. Additionally, UStream dropped out twice. My internet connection was fine (I was still in the chats), the server side just thunked out twice in a few minute span.

On the plus side the audio was better, I used a solid color backdrop, and the downloaded version is in mpeg format this week instead of flv's that won't work for anyone. Also included in the torrent are the show notes and the media I reference in the show, including a short Kopete screencast and a couple of JavaScript Plasmoids.

I am learning exactly what I want from a DIY broadcast software and am becoming increasingly tempted to see what Solid+Phonon in KDE 4.3 are capable of doing for me. For now, I just learn the quirks of what's available and soldier on improving each episode incrementally.

You can grab the torrent here and enjoy it at your leisure. Cheers! =)

Thanks for the torrent. For some reason the first two parts of this week's episode are not playing on my kubuntu box, though the last part, and last week's video are working fine.

I meant "not playing on the ustream site"

Loved it. Thanks (again), Aaron.

Nice work Aaron.

What's pretty cool is that while watching, already seeding for 11 others. Obviously not the only one watching on a Saturday night.

Unfortunately, the torrent version of the video does not show the overlayed text/videos :(

I cannot find the Kopete screencast in the torrented targz. Can anyone give me a hint?

Aaron, could you add the files direct to the torrent, instead of targzting them? That way one could save the unpacking and one copy would be sufficient for viewing and for seeding.

Good show, keep up the good work!

I was gladdened to see your comment about wondering what Solid+Phonon could make possible. You'll obviously have your hands full with KDE 4.3, but if you can manage to make some progress with screencasting and broadcasting software, I imagine the good vibes from that work will propagate into other similar projects.

Tools for working with basic audio and video streams are very crude at the moment, both in usability (mostly UI stuff here, as well as inefficient workflows) and versatility (feature-set, transcoding options, and manipulation of said streams).

Totally not trying to set a bar or create expectations or anything -- the comment just made me feel warm and happy, and I wanted to share that.

thanks for the torrent, I wasn't able to fully watch live.

It would be nice if the video were split up according to the several sections in it, but I guess you just don't find the time to do that, no problem :)

Hm,
Maybe someone can provide actual videos/presentations with text mixed with aaron speach? Now i feel a little bit lost.

As has been mentioned before, the UStream software does not record text and videos.

Yep, UStream sucks. Lets see if we can do better (integrate it into kdenlive?).

You can record from your screen and from
webcam & microphone, and then upload this videos to torrent

@Alec: yes, i said that in the blog post even.

@Stefan Sarzio: i'll try to do a torrent next week where all the file are included separately and not as a single compressed archive. it's not like the compression is saving much given what it is compressing. ;)

@patpi: it's all in the torrent file

@gogast: and how would that work for live broadcasting, which is the goal of this show? the interaction with viewers is really important imho. and no, i'm not going to re-mix things after the fact as i just don't have the time to do that.

@mattie: yes, that would be great (dividing up the video into the sections). that might be something nice for others to take on.

so.. if anyone would like to do some post-production work, i'm happy to link to the results from my blog.
