The Luminosity of Free Software, Episode 6

It's Thursday again .. and that means another episode of "The Luminosity of Free Software" in which I host a constructive examination of issues of interest to the Free software community. At least, that's the goal. :)

In this week's episode I will be discussing two topics before opening up the open participation Q&A session:

  • Wayland: In this segment I will take you to the place where the x.org developers go. Yes, we'll be looking at the next-generation display system known as Wayland, what it does (and doesn't) do, the state of current development, it's relation to x.org and what it can mean for future Free software desktop efforts.
  • Krita: A new shining star in the Libre Graphics constellation. Also, that there is a Libre Graphics constellation.
  • Q&A: As usual, we will spend the bulk of our time discussing your queries. You can ask them live in the chats, or in the comments below.

You can watch the show live tonight in my Google+ feed or in my Youtube channel at 20:00 UTC. Directly after the show, it will appear on Youtube for viewing at your leisure and sharing with others.

See you there!

Hi Aaron,

Yet again a great show! Thank you for answering my question about using KDE Libs in Qt Applications on the show. It looks best that we wait till when we can migrate to Qt 5 and then look at KDE 5 libraries. It definitely seems a sensible idea to reduce KDE libs into a smaller set of libraries and the analogy of a salad buffet made me laugh. Look forward to the next show!

Many Thanks
Luke Parry

Hi Aaron

If I may, I would like to suggest the following topics for future LoFS:

1) Isn't time to agree on a standard set of color management tools and APIs for KDE? There has been KolorManager for "centuries", but it is still not "official". OTH, there is recent work on colord and kwin, but some peolpe from the two projects seem to be wasting energy arguing with each other...The lack of an easy way to load ICC and callibration profiles in KDE is holding back its potential for media artists and common users.

2) Your take on Cannonical's claim of "division" of floss developers. It seems that it was directed at Kubuntu. Also, why is there a need for Mir and its imcompatibility with kwin.

3) PIM upgrades problems when upgrading KDE SC. Most of upgrades Imve been through were met with a range of problems, from small glitches, to not seing new options, to having to erase all settings and start over. Most traumatic is when we lose all emails and calendars. Are there best practices to be performed during an upgrade? Is there a tool to help less tech savy users?

4) I'd like to propose a initial settings context for Dolphin. I constanlty spend a lot of time customizing Dolphin for all new installs. A survey, context or whatever would be nice to find out what users preferences look like. Maybe it would be nice to define portable profiles that one can take to new installations. Pehaps even a tool to generate deeper KDE skeletons would be nice.

Cheers,
Luis Soeiro

@Luke: glad you enjoy it and got something useful from it! :)

@Luis: some good questions and ideas there. I'll see what I can do to work some of them in to upcoming shows! Thanks ..

Hi Aaron! Nice talks.

Since you said wanted to talk also about non-KDE free software-ish stuff, how about standard-based decentralized means of communication, like Jabber/XMPP for chat/calls, identi.ca/StatusNet for microblogging, and maybe others? It could be a very interesting topic.

Cheers!
